Cyprus Flights. Getting the Best Deals

Monday, August 31st, 2009
Kev Moore asked:

Cyprus isn’t one of the cheapest destinations to fly to but if you are prepared to shop around for your Cyprus flights there are still some great deals to be had. The introduction of “green taxes” has not helped the situation any either so locating the best prices is now even more of an issue. Charter companies offering flights only are a good bet but you need to brave enough to wait until the last minute before you book. This is not ideal if you have already reserved your hotel accommodation and there is a hire car waiting for you at the Cyprus airport. The other problem with many of the charter flights is that they don’t always cater for longer stays or one way flights. These are becoming more and more in demand as those owning holiday homes spend more time on the Island.

Sometimes it’s worth checking with the travel agents in Cyprus if you are looking for a one way flight or even a return to the U.K. Rumor has it that most of the empty seats from Cyprus to the U.K. are passed to these agents especially seats with the national carriers. Even the charter companies and global travel businesses like Thompson and First Choice will need to put bums on seats so to speak so they too must be worth a try. Of course the best tool at your disposal is the internet which will give you the ability to make instant price comparisons on your Cyprus flights. That said it may still be worth a visit to the local Cyprus travel agent if you are looking to travel the other way.

One of the reasons that flights to Cyprus are so expensive is the cost of landing taxes on the Island. This coupled with the journey time goes towards making the Island a pricey option for flight only deals. There have been several occasions where it has actually worked out cheaper to book a last minute package tour rather than a flight only. The party have then just forgone the accommodation and made their own airport transfer arangments such as a taxi or car hire. Once again however the major drawback to this option is that you may have to wait untill the last minute before you book your Cyprus flight. However for retired couples or people not tied to set holiday entitlements like the self employed this option could work real well. It really does come into it’s own too if you are one of those lucky people who own a Cyprus villa or apartment.

For most people wishing to stay on the Island for more than the standard two weeks the best option may be to book with a company that makes scheduled Cyprus flights. Unlike the charter flights where a tour operator hires a plane and then fills it, the scheduled plane travels the same route at the same time every week. Most of these companies will fly to a specific U.K. airport about twice a week or more from Cyprus and then back again. Just like trains or buses they are scheduled to fly on a pre defined date and time as per their timetable. The only downside is that they will more often than not only operate from the major locations like Luton or Heathrow which may involve some additional travel to and from the airport. The upside is that these companies need to fill those Cyprus flights so the cost may be quite competitive.

Another reason that Cyprus flights seem so expensive is because the budget airlines have spoilt us with those cheap flights to other parts of Europe. When you stop to consider the real cost of flying in terms of fuel plus the capital outlay air travel is in fact actually relatively cheap and affordable. Imagine for instance paying a taxi driver by the mile to take you and your luggage 2400 miles! Bearing in mind that the cost of buying a taxi is only a tiny fraction of the price of the plane and would probably use less fuel for the whole trip than the plane consumes at take off. If you look at it that way a couple of hundred pounds or so to travel such a huge distance so quickly actually makes them cheap Cyprus flights.

St. Hilarion Castle in North Cyprus

Friday, August 28th, 2009

When you visit St Hilarion Castle in North Cyprus for the first time it is easy to see why it has been dubbed the ‘fairytale castle’. Emerging from the rugged rock face, high up on the mountainside overlooking the coastal town of Kyrenia, the Castle springs into vision like an optical illusion as you close in on its location. It was fashioned from the rocky outcrop on which it sits during 11th Century – built as much to surprise the enemy as to defend the island against raiders from the Arab Lands. Today, it offers tranquillity and romance in abundance. Standing upon the Castle ruins surveying its inspirational views with only the breeze playing about your ears for company is a truly magical experience.
The early days of St Hilarion

St Hilarion Castle takes its name from the hermit who is said to have taken refuge here in North Cyprus after he fled the Holy Land. He was among 300 or so Saints that are believed to have inhabited the island from the 4th Century onwards, the island’s “popularity” being much down to its proximity to Palestine than anything else. Not much is known about St Hilarion the man. Artefacts were recorded as belonging to him, and so a monastery and church were founded here in the 10th Century, prior to the Castle’s construction.

The first reference to the Castle itself was made in 1191. Historical documents tell of the successful capture of St Hilarion Castle by Richard the Lionheart during the Crusades.

Visiting St Hilarion Castle

St Hilarion is a complex built on three levels. The Lower Ward consists of the main defending wall to the Castle, and the living areas where the garrison and their horses would have been accommodated. The Middle Ward is made up of the bulk of the Castle, including the Royal Palace, the kitchens and the Church. St Hilarion’s Upper Ward extends upwards to the west of the Middle Ward. Here the Castle reaches its highest point at 732m above sea level, and is marked by the Prince John Tower – the lookout surrounded by a sheer drop on three sides. The Tower is so named for the Bulgarian mercenaries who were allegedly cast off the tower to their deaths for their plot to overthrow Prince John of Antioch in 1373.

St Hilarion Castle is signposted on the main road linking Kyrenia to Nicosia. Northern Cyprus car hire is strongly recommended as the climb up to the Castle is steep. The car park is situated at the foot of the Castle. Access to the Castle itself is then on foot.

Where to Travel With Kids on a Budget

Friday, August 28th, 2009
Stuart S. Travel asked:

Of course you can travel just about anywhere with your kids on a budget. Like any travel experience on a budget you need to research and plan well to make the most of your travel dollar. Many places, however, are family or kid friendly and will throw in added extras for the children. So whether you intend traveling at home or abroad, look for places that will cater to your family’s needs.

RV trips are a great way to travel on a budget. In fact, traveling with a car is almost essential for families. It is usually cheaper than buying rail passes or catching taxis everywhere. But more importantly, it gives you that ‘door to door’ freedom that is necessary when traveling with kids.

If you are traveling overseas, have you considered staying in a hostel with your family? This is a much cheaper option than staying in hotels and many hostels are family friendly and have no age limit (except in Bavaria where you can’t be older than twenty six). You can request a room with enough bunk beds to accommodate your family and you can cook your meals in the communal kitchen. Huge savings to be made!

In the USA there are many places to travel with your family on a budget. Consider these options:

1. Camping. The cheapest option around for any travel adventure. Many campsites have activities for kids and if you don’t like the idea of staying in a tent, many places have cabins to rent that are still cheaper than a hotel room. Camping gets you up close and personal with nature and gets the kids outside and running around.

2. What about spending some time at a Working Farm or Dude Ranch? Look around for reasonably priced holidays at these destinations and you will find plenty of activities and atmosphere for kids and adults alike.

3. Head to Disneyland in off peak season for big savings.

4. The same can be said for traveling to Hawaii. Check the packages available in low season and see how affordable it is.

5. You’ll also find some excellent deals in traveling to Mexico. Go for all-inclusive resorts, especially in the low season.

What about if you want to travel overseas? Where are some good places to take the kids on a budget?

* Although Australia is a long way away and can be a bit pricey to get there, it is a very child-friendly place with lots of cost saving adventures to be had for the kids. Australian off peak is different from North America so do some research.

* Europe can be done on a budget with kids. Pick your destinations with the kids in mind. Get them involved in your itinerary. Stay in hostels and travel by car. You’ll be amazed at how much you save and how much you see.

* Some island resorts are very child friendly. In Fiji there are resorts where children under twelve stay and eat for free. Do your research!

* How about a family cruise? Cruises are great because they are all-inclusive, cater for families and you get to explore lots of places. There are some good family package deals to be found with most cruise companies.

So get planning and get packed. Plan your family vacation and check out the deals available. Going off peak is the best way to save money. If you are going to take the kids out of school buy them a journal so they can record their experiences. It’s amazing how much they’ll learn by traveling with their family.

5 Great Ideas For a Family Activity Holiday

Friday, August 28th, 2009
Kieron Sellens asked:

If you’re looking to do something different with the kids when you next go on holiday, have you thought about horse riding in America? How about cycling beside the Danube? Or dog sledding in Lapland? If you want an experience that your children will really remember on holiday, then a family activity holiday may be just the thing for you.

Many parents may be put off by health and safety concerns for these kinds of adventure holiday, but they shouldn’t be. Almost all standard activity holidays will have some kind of child friendly option, and there are plenty of niche operators that specifically offer family activity holidays. If you are worried about safety, it is always a good idea to check out any adventure holiday company that you decide to go with, to make sure it is reputable and provides a good service. Read any online reviews that you can find, and call them up and see how they respond to your concerns.

If you start to look around for a family activity holiday, you’ll be spoilt for choice: here are five ideas to get you started.

Cycling in Europe

Cycling abroad can be a safe and fun family activity holiday, and it is very easy to organise. Make sure you check the difficulty level of any cycling trip before you go, and be sure to let your travel operator know that you’ll be bringing children with you. Sweating your way up a steep mountain pass with an exhausted child in tow is no one’s idea of a fun holiday!

But as long as you pick a route that all the family will be comfortable with, you can have a brilliant time. The Loire Valley and the route along the Danube are two of Europe’s most established cycling routes, and they are also suitable for children on a family activity holiday, being on flat and gently hilly terrain and taking in astonishing views along the way.

Safari in Africa

There’s little that gets kids more excited than wild animals, and an African safari makes for a great family activity holiday. Safaris can include hippo spotting on boat trips, 4×4 drives through nature reserves, visits to farms, animal sanctuaries and orphanages, and many other activities.

The safari business is very well established, and you’ll find plenty of companies that can provide packages specifically for family activity holidays. Kenya is the most common destination, though safari holidays are run in many other African countries as well, such as South Africa and Tanzania.

Riding & Ranch Stay in America

For a real cowboy experience, there’s nothing like a ride and ranch holiday - learning to ride, spending time with the animals and learning some basic cowboy skills are all things that appeal to kids and their parents! Many tour operators accept absolute beginners, though it may be worth getting your children (and yourself!) a little experience in the saddle before you travel abroad.

Make sure you choose the right kind of ranch experience for your family activity holiday. Working ranch holidays (including cattle drives) aren’t suitable for young children, as they require long hours in the saddle and a fair amount of riding experience. Centre based riding holidays, where you stay in a single location with daily riding activities, can accommodate all ages, and some progressive riding holidays (where you move from ranch to ranch over a number of days) are suitable for slightly older children.

Dog Sledding in Lapland

If cutting through the snow with your kids on a husky driven sledge sounds like your idea of heaven, this might be the activity holiday for you! For children, the combination of snow, animals and adventure can be irresistible. The scenery in Lapland is remarkable, and there’s even a chance that you’ll catch a glimpse of the famous Northern Lights when you visit.

Dog sledding can be done as a one day excursion or, if you and your children are feeling adventurous, can be part of a multi-day expedition, stopping off at various lodges and cabins along the way. This is a family activity holiday for slightly older children - check with travel companies to find out the exact minimum age for their trips.

Sailing through the Greek Islands

Sailing can make for a superb family activity holiday, and the Greek Islands are an ideal destination - not only is the scenery beautiful, the steady waters make it a very safe place to sail and swim. Children and adults can learn the basics of sailing, swim in the Mediterranean, visit harbour towns and bask in the sun. No previous knowledge of sailing or yachting is necessary in most cases, with full tuition and assistance available.

Most family sailing holidays will be based on a flotilla, which are medium sized yachts with sails and engines. Flotillas are a very family friendly way to sail, and have become hugely popular in recent years. There are plenty of tour operators that offer flotilla holidays in Greece, and if you have very young children they can provide extra safety precautions, such as safety netting along the guardrails, to help keep your kids safe.

Direct Flights to Spain

Monday, August 24th, 2009
Michael J Lee asked:

Cheap direct flights to Spain. Compare all low cost direct flights to and from your local airport to Spain with one search. Simply include your departure airport and your destination airport along with your dates of travel into the flight search engine and all available direct low cost flight options will appear.

Compare all low cost and cheap flights to and from all airports with one search. Simply include your local airport and your destination airport or region along with your dates of travel into the flight search engine and all available low cost flight options will appear on lowest price order. One simple search to find all cheap flights from all airports to your holiday resort destination. Compare the lowest flight prices from the low cost budget airlines.

Spain has become one of the easiest countries to reach by with direct flights from the U.K., thanks mainly to the low cost airlines who will now fly you to many regional airports, as well of the major cities. The large number of tourists that visit each year has helped increase the need for direct flights to Spain and with many people also having purchased second homes there, the whole of the country has become accessible by air.

The use of smaller airports has been helped by the Spanish government investing large sums in improving the road and rail links between cities and also by upgrading services at the airport itself.

When searching for your direct flights to Spain, often the best deals are to be had by booking through the internet. Some websites offer a search engine, which enable you to put in your details and the computer will then carry out a comprehensive search for flights that match your dates. If you book well ahead of your departure date, you will usually receive a better offer than by leaving it until the last minute, although occasionally a good deal can be had at the 11th hour, if you are able to delay booking your direct flight until just before you go.

Mid-week direct flights are generally better priced than those at the weekend and avoiding school holidays will definitely improve your chances of a good deal.

Direct flights to the less popular airports in Spain are well worth investigating, so make sure that you search by region, in addition to the place where you are actually staying, as often there are smaller, lesser used airports within driving distance that will work out cheaper. It might be worth considering booking each journey separately, especially if you are planning to tour around the Spanish countryside, as a single journey to one destination with a return from another, can often be more cost effective.

As a rule, the low cost airlines, such as Easyjet and Ryanair, will offer you a better price for your direct flights to Spain than using a scheduled service, but you may need to be prepared to give up such things as an in-flight meal and an allocated seat. Usually, the amount you pay for your ticket is purely the air fare plus taxes, which is why tickets offered by the low cost airlines are often referred to as having ‘no frills’. Refreshments have to be purchased on board, sometimes at very inflated prices, but usually your direct flight will be of no more than 2 - 3 hours in length, if travelling from the U.K. and the lower cost of your ticket makes this worthwhile.

If the cost of your direct flights to Spain is not an issue, a scheduled service with a large international carrier, such as British Airways or Iberia Airlines, may be your preferred choice. Usually, these flights would be from major airports in the U.K., such as London Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester to one of the larger cities in Spain. There are fewer flights available from and to regional airports and they often have to be booked direct with the airline, or through a Travel Agent, which would be more expensive.

12 Ways to Create Your Own Family Christmas Holiday Tradition - Part I

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009
Maria Schasteen asked:

Family Christmas Holiday Tradition gives us freedom and guidance in a time that is otherwise hectic and stressful, and often unorganized. Tradition gives us a blueprint of how our family anticipates and loves the holiday season, what they expect, how they love to celebrate.

Tradition gives us the opportunity to lay out our Christmas holiday activities well in advance. We can prepare a plan of action, and organize our holiday events using a true and proven site map. That takes off stress from last minute activities, e.g., the frantic search for needed holiday decor, or the headache of coming up with the right holiday menu.

But what shall we do, if our family does not have a Christmas holiday tradition yet? Simply, we create our own tradition. Let’s open the music box of our own childhood memories. What was it that made Christmas holidays so special? Was it the heavenly scent of cinnamon, orange and fir, all woven into the air in a potpourri of Christmas promise? Or do we remember mother’s Christmas story at candlelight? Was it the holiday music that touched our heart? With our own Christmas holiday memories at heart, let’s manifest our own family Christmas tradition! Here are twelve ways!

1. Build the excitement and joy up in your and your family’s heart. Start by decorating your home to invite Christmas promise into your family’s life. My mother used to decorate every picture in our home with a little fresh and wonderfully smelling fir twig. When we saw that mother was preparing for the holidays, excitement built up in our lives.

2. On December 1st, we brought in a fir wreath with four candles. Often three of those candles were purple, but one was pink. Living through the first two weeks, we children were eagerly looking forward to the third Sunday when the pink candle of Joy and anticipation was lit.

3. Of course, we had an Advent calendar and one of us was allowed to open a window each day. This meant that we children went to great length to ensure that we were good kids - cleaning up our rooms, removing the trash, washing the dishes, etc. - so every one of us got a turn to open a window.

4. It was custom that a Madonna statue was carried from house to house in memory of Maria’s search for a place to give birth to her child. So when it was our turn to open our family door and heart to Maria, our mother would bathe the room in warm, gentle candle light. We sang the old carols and prayed. It was an honor to accommodate the statue for one night, and every family tried to prepare a special welcome.

5. On the 4th of December, mom would bring in St. Barbara twigs from the garden. These cherry twigs, now brown and barren, will open their blossoms in the holy night. We watched the Barbara twigs carefully every day with excitement and wonder. Because out of these seemingly dead brown twigs, soon little green leaves would develop in the warm family room.

6. The 6th of December was St. Nicolas Day. That was a day of joy for children. In the window we would find a red crackling plastic sack with apples, mandarins, nuts and chocolate. But in our family it was also tradition that St. Nicolas would visit in person. I remember one special visit, when St. Nicolas admonished my little brother who was very bad to me at the time. The little guy did not know that anyone would know - especially not St. Nicolas, the old wise man with the sparkling eyes and the long white beard, who supposedly came directly from heaven into our home. From that day one, my little brother did not bother me ever again. I guess he learned his lesson.

This ends Part I of our Family Christmas Holiday Traditions. Be sure to read Part II also. We’ll discuss the traditional Christmas celebration, share a beautiful and moving Christmas story, and much more.

When Christmas holiday draws near, don’t let yourself be burdened by stressful last minute holiday preparations. Follow your time proven family holiday tradition - and if you don’t have a holiday tradition yet, manifest your own! Utilize some of the suggestions I shared with you from our own family Christmas holiday tradition.
